Abstract
For several decades, typhoons have caused huge damage to port facilities in Busan, Korea. A surface concrete of breakwater and tetrapod (TTP) were carried away by strong waves, and shipping containers and tower cranes were overturned by strong wind. In particular, the shipping containers and the tower cranes are vulnerable to damage from strong wind because these are directly exposed to the wind. However, wind-resistant design of the shipping containers has been rarely studied (Wu et al., 2011). The purpose of this study is to investigate the wind characteristics of shipping containers through the wind tunnel test, and the damage occurrence velocities of containers with various side ratios and weights based onresults of wind tunnel tests. Four types of containers are considered as referred to JR container (12ft) and ISO containers (20ft, 40ft and 40ft high cube). The wind tunnel tests were performed at the boundary layer wind tunnel located in Tokyo Polytechnic University(TPU), Japan.
