Abstract
Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) transport has been investigated using a coarse resolution global ocean circulation model based on the HYCOM (Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model). The atmospheric forcing is adopted from the monthly surface heat and momentum fluxes of ECMWF 40 year Reanalysis (ERA-40) data for 1958 to 2001 and ERA-interim data for 2002 to 2009. For the surface flux correction, the sea surface salinity has been relaxed to the climatological data with a time scale of 30 days and the long wave correction has been applied to the surface thermal radiation flux. The prominent ENSO related features in the equatorial Pacific region are successfully reproduced in regard with the conventional Nino 3.4 index as well as related sea level variability. The depth integrated long term mean ITF transport at 113.5 E is about 16 Sv with the standard deviation of 2.7 Sv. ITF transport anomaly shows a good agreement with the ENSO phenomena. The larger (smaller) ITF transport than normal years have been found during the La Nina (El Nino) years. The long-term trend of ITF transport had been decreased with a slope of -0.1 Sv/yr before 2001, however, the recent transport during 2002 to 2009 has been rather increased. It is worthwhile to investigate the impact of the global warming scenario to the ITF transport. Further study plan to understand the dynamics of the ITF variability and its response to the f
