Abstract
Considering the pace of recent advances in undersea technology and high demands on mineral resources, it seems reasonable to take it for granted that commercial seabed mining become reality in the near future. However, these mining activities could severely damage the exotic and exuberant deep-sea ecosystem, of which biodiversity and functioning are poorly understood. Therefore, deep-sea mining should come with the precautionary approaches and strategies to understand and reduce the impact on deep-sea environments. To that end, we need to promote conservation efforts at every level - from international governance agencies (ISA, CBD, etc.) to individual mining companies. This presentation introduces a case study of environmental consideration, as an example, engaged in the Tonga EEZ for seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) mining by Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST). I summarize the current environmental settings of the target mining area and the proposed environmental management plan to minimize the environmental impact. In conclusion, I strongly recommend that academic, commercial, governmental, and non-governmental stakeholders should try their best to reach a consensus on the environmental management strategies for the deep-sea mining before it comes into reality.
