Abstract
The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, formerly known as KORDI) is a comprehensive ocean research institute partially funded by the Korean government and partially supported through competitive funding sources. The KIOST established a tropical research station (Korea South Pacic Ocean Research Center, KSORC) in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) in 2000, and has been undertaking various marine research projects in the tropical Pacic. The tropical Pacic islands provide valuable insights that help not only to understand coral reef environments, but also to foresee the future of the rapidly changing Korean climate and ocean regime. ‘Tropical Pacific Project (project manager: Dr. Moon Sang Kwon)’, one of the KIOST’s research programs, has been aiming to better understand the coastal/shallow marine regions of the tropical Pacific islands. In 2013, the KIOST carried out a coastal marine environment survey through this project in the lagoon and coastal seas of Palau with the permission and collaboration of the Palau government. In this report, we provide survey results and relevant maps from the 2013 Palau survey. This valuable information can be used to understand and protect the coastal marine environment of Palau. Our survey results and relevant maps on the coastal marine environment of Palau may contribute to knowledge-based policy-making decisions on coastal environmental issues, sT established a tropical research station (Korea South Pacic Ocean Research Center, KSORC) in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) in 2000, and has been undertaking various marine research projects in the tropical Pacic.
