Abstract
Thermal power plants are extensively used in the West coast of Korea for power generation. These power plants use sea water for cooling. The increased water temperature by power plant thermal discharge has a significant affect the aquatic life, and disturb the ecosystem. This has harmed to fisheries in this region and it is becoming a social issues. Therefore, it is necessary to produce and evaluate data to economic compensate for this area.
The remote sensing technique has many advantages in providing highly efficient and quantitative information. Many of previous studies have been conducted to monitoring thermal discharge using satellite data. However, the low resolution satellites (e.g MODIS, AVHRR) show a lot of disadvantages in coastal lines. It has required a higher spatial resolution in order to utilize as policy data related to damage compensation in economic view. As a solution to this problem, the high-spatial resolution satellite and air-borne IR sensor needed for monitoring thermal discharges.
In Korea, two high-resolution satellites will be acquired by 2021. However, since these satellite utilize the Middle-wavelength infrared channel (MWIR 3~5μm) instead of theThermal infrared channel (TIR 8~13μm).
