dc.description.abstract Several sensor fusion methods have been investigated based on the data set consisting of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite IRS-1D LISS-III and Panchromatic (PAN) images as well as the European Remote Sensing Satellite ERS-2 SAR image of a part of the southeastern estuarine coastal mangrove wetland ecosystem of Tamil Nadu, India. The properties of the fused images and their ability to preserve spatial and spectral information of the original images were examined in view of spectral discrimination and mapping of various wetland features that include mangrove communities, degraded mangroves, marsh, mudflat, aquaculture, sand dunes and their associated land cover features. One of the goals of the present study was to see whether integration of spectrally and spatially complementary remotely sensed data could facilitate visual and digital interpretation of different mangrove species within the study site. The four sensor fusion methods attempted include two algebraic models (Multiplicative and Brovey Transforms) and two spectral domain models (Principal Components Transform and Intensity-Hue-Saturation). To take the advantage of high spectral resolution IRS-ID LISS-III and high spatial resolution PAN of the same plot form, a recent and efficient method of fusion, based on multiresolution wavelet transform method, has been presented. In a pyramid fashion, each LISS-III or PAN image was decomposed into an orthogonal wavelet representation at a given course resolution consisting of a low frequency approximation image and a set of high frequency, spatially oriented detail (also referred to as structure) images. Performing an inverse wavelet transform using the approximation image from each band of LISS-III and details from the PAN image led to the derivation of the merged images. The spatial and spectral information about various wetland features present in the merged image was compared quantitatively with those obtained from the traditional fusion methods.
