The Korea Ocean Satellite Center (KOSC) launched GOCI, the world’s first geostationary ocean satellite, in 2010 and successfully completed satellite operations, ground system administration, algorithm development, and satellite data calibration/validation. By securing its own know-how in operating geostationary ocean satellites and satellite data quality management, the KOSC successfully launched GOCI-II, a follow-up satellite to GOCI, in 2020, and is observing not only Northeast Asia (local mode) but also full disk mode. By leveraging the operating knowledge and technology of GOCI and GOCI-II, it contributed to Korea's surge ahead as a ocean satellite powerhouse. The KOSC will continue to conduct research to improve satellite data algorithms that can be trusted by users. Furthermore, it plans to continue research on various satellite utilization technologies such as monitoring environmental changes in the sea and along the coast of the Korean Peninsula, forecasting fisheries resources, and responding to disasters in collaboration with multiple satellites (high-resolution and SAR satellites).
