Abstract
Ecklonia cava, a brown algae, contains various natural substances with physiological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulant, anti-viral, and anti-diabetic effects. Jeju lava seawater (JLSW) is Jeju's unique water resource that is naturally filtered underground by volcanic rock layers. In this study, Ecklonia cava extracts (ECE) were prepared using lava seawater, and the potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the extract were evaluated. The JLSW-ECE dose-dependently inhibited the nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. The release of inflammatory cytokines was significantly suppressed by the extract. In addition, JLSW-ECE increased the antioxidant enzymes activities including superoxide dismutase and catalase, and the DPPH and ABTS radicals scavenging effects in a concentration-dependent manner. JLSW-ECE inhibited the production of ROS in hydrogen peroxide-induced vero cells. These results imply that JLSW-ECE could be developed as a functional food by the food industry, and utilized for the commercial production as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
