Abstract
Since coastal areas provide spacial and economic benefits to humans, the use of surroundings continuously increases, and coastal roads and traffic have been growing together. In Korea, the domestic road expansion rate and the vehicle penetration rate are very high globally, and pollution with road dust (RD) is also increasing. Traffic activities produce not only exhaust gas but also wear particles from tires, brake pads, and roads (non-exhaust emissions), which are found as one of the major pollutants in the estuary environment, and are emerging as global interest. Non-exhaust emissions such as tire and road wear particles (TRWP) contain high concentrations of Zn Cu, Sb, Pb, Cd, black carbon, and various organic compounds with toxicity to marine aquatic organisms. However, there is a lack of studies on this in Korea. Therefore, to predict and reduce the damage to aquatic and coastal ecosystems of road runoff with RD, it is necessary to identify the pollution status and sources of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in RD origin fine particles. Therefore, this study discussed the distribution of PTEs on RD, its primary sources, and important elements through literature research and analysis.
