Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the changes in the amount of freshwater by opening and closing the sluice gate installed in the estuary embankment affect the community structure of zooplankton. Sampling was conducted 15 times in the Yeongsan River estuary located in the southwestern coast of Korea from February 2004 to January 2006. In low-salinity gradient regions around the gate, freshwater zooplankton was abundant after the gate opening. Still, the number of zooplankton species showed little difference compared to that in high-salinity gradient regions. Meanwhile, the zooplankton abundance was sharply decreased in mid-salinity gradient regions, and the low abundance was continued for several days, but the Chl-a concentration explosively increased. When the salinity concentration was stabilized after closing the gate, the abundance and the number of zooplankton species minutely increased around all study areas. It is considered that the stable salt content and the large amount of nutrients that flowed in on land affected the increase of Chl-a concentration and zooplankton communities. These facts indicate that the inflow of freshwater due to the opening and closing of floodgates can positively affect the increase in the number of zooplankton appearing in the long term. From these results, it is considered that freshwater flowed in by opening-closing of gate affects positively increasing of the number of emerged zooplankton species in the long term. In addition, species composition caused by freshwater inflow was restored at the point that salt concentration was stabilized, which shows that coastal copepods can adapt themselves actively to changes of salt concentration.
