Significance of provenance changes in Asian dust transport over Jeju Island

dc.description.abstract The study area, the Hanon paleo-maar of Jeju Island, Korea, lies downwind of the westerly jet and winter monsoon; Asian dust provenance provides an indication of geochronological changes in wind fields along the westerly jet path, and the surface soil conditions in the Mongolian Gobi and Taklimakan Deserts. The Hanon paleo-maar sediment core has been studied to determine paleoclimatic changes and East Asian monsoon variations (32.8-7.1 ka). Here we examined Asian dust source regions in the Mongolian Gobi and Taklimakan Deserts using a proxy Eu-anomaly representative of Asian dust fractions in Hanon paleo-maar sediment; a more negative Eu-anomaly was found during the last glacial period (~0.86 on average with Mongolian Gobi dominance) than in the Holocene (~0.93 on average with Taklimakan dominance). The results showed that provenance changes in dust transport indicate that Asian dust flux associated with the surface EAWM intensity is overall greater during the last glacial period, while the dust transported via the upper level westerly jet could reach the study region during the Holocene. -
