Abstract
Limited information is available regarding the phytoplankton communities in the Arctic Ocean, especially, Chukchi Sea. Therefore, we conducted a research cruise from the Bering Strait to the Chukchi Sea in August 2016, and used 18S ribosomal DNA metabarcoding to examine the changes in phytoplankton dynamics in the Arctic Ocean water mass. The Bering Strait had high water temperature and salinity in the surface layer. However, the temperature of Chukchi Sea was below 0°C between the surface and sub-surface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layers, and its salinity was clearly distinguishable. The phytoplankton community was classified into three groups at 60% similarity. Group I was associated with “high temperature in the surface layer of the Bering Strait and southern Chukchi Sea,” and mainly comprised Dinoflagellates (71%) and Heterocapsa rotundata as the predominant taxa. Group II was associated with “low temperature in the SCM layer between the Bering Strait and the Chukchi Sea,” comprising Bacillariophytes (51%) and Dinoflagellates (47%) as the major groups. Group III was associated with “Chukchi Sea characteristics affected by the ice-melting process” and comprised Chlorophytes (45%), Micromonas polaris, and Bathycoccus prasinos as the predominant taxa. Overall, our results indicate that phytoplankton community structures are highly dependent on each different water mass types and are expected to shift dramatically based on seasonal and climate change effects.
