Abstract
To understand the long term change of phytoplankton ecology in the Yellow Sea, we analyzed the environmental and phytoplannkton data produced in the Eastern part of the Yellow Sea from 1987-2008. The distribution of water temperatarue, minimum salinity and transparency showed slight increases over a 20 year period. The mean concentration of DIN has increased dramataically, due to the incrasing input of N from land and atmospheric deposition. The decrease of Si and the increase of N in the Yellow Sea caused changes in phytoplankton abundance and dominant species changes from diatoms to dinoflagellates and nanoflagelattes. The primary productivity of phytoplankton in the Yellow Sea has increased slightly due to the increase in DIN, transparency and phytoplankton abundance
