Abstract
- Total of 91,094 reads obtained could be classified into 21 Synechococcus and 7Prochlorococcus clades. Synechococcus wasdominant in the East China Sea whereasProchlorococcus was dominant in the Kuroshio and tropical waters. Thus, there was a bigdifference in cyanobacterial diversity among areas. In tropical waters, vertical composition ofProchlorococcus was very different. High light adapted ecotype (HLII) was abundant in thesurface but various low light adapted ecotypes were dominantly found in the lower part ofeuphotic zone. In the East China Sea, Synechococcus belonging to clades I and IV favoring lowtemperature were dominant but warm-water types were dominant in a station affected by branchof Kuroshio. These differences of cyanobacterial diversity among oceanic areas might berelated with the differences in temperature, nutrient concentration, light conditions and mixing ofunderlying current systems.
