dc.description.abstract Sprolithond rurum is a well-known nongeniculate coralline alga (so-callled rhodoliths), commonly found on rocks of intertidal and subtidal water. Non-geniculated coralline algae play an important role in marine ecosystems as primary producers and carbonate provider. Recent molecular study recognized the order Sporolithales as a sister of orders Corallinales and Rhodogorgonals within the subclass Corallinophycidae. Only nine plastid genomes were reported to date from more than 6000 red algal species. To fill the gap of our understanding of plastid evolution, we determined and characterized complete plastid genome from the field collected sample of S. durum using next-generation geneme sequencing technology. the genome size is 191 Kbp comprising 205 genes, 28 tRNAs, and 17 ORFs. We conducted comparative analysis with already reported Calliarthron tuberculosum and chondrus crispus plastid genomes. From the analysis, one candidate of horizontal gene transfer was recognized in plastid genome. here, we discuss evolutionary history of red algae with this newly determined plastid genome of non-geniculated coralline.rs and carbonate provider.
