Abstract
The heterokont algae are an exceptionally diverse group of protist that includes a wide range of morphological types such as ameboid, capsoid, coccoid, flagellates, brown seaweeds, and silical-walled diatoms. Recent phylogenetic analyses show that there are three major clades of photosynthetic heterokont algae, termed the SI, SII and SIII clades. Within the SI clade, relationships among the Aurearenophyceae, Chrysoparadoxophyceae, Phaeothamniophyceae, Phaeophyceae and Xanthophyceae and other lineages are not well known. Furthermore, a large number of taxa have been described within this clade but their taxonomy, nomenclature and phylogeny remains not fully resolved.
In this study, we examined 23 strains representing 15 species classified in the SI clade. Based upon a seven-gene molecular phy logeny (nuclear-encoded SSU rRNA and plastid-encoded atpB, psaA, psaB, psbA, psbC and rbcL) and light microscopic observations, we propose the class Phaeosaccioph y ceae class. nov., and nine new species: Phaeosaccion multiseriatum sp. nov., Phaeosaccion okelly i sp. nov., Phaeoschizochlamys santosii sp. nov., Phaeoschizochlamys siveri sp. nov., Phaeothamnion wetherbeei sp. nov., Stichogloeafawleyi sp. nov., Tetrachrysis dopii sp. nov., Tetrasporopsis moei sp. nov., and Psammochrysis cassiotisii gen. & sp. nov. Our analy sis provides an unprecedented framework to discuss the evolutionary trends of the Stramenopiles' SI clade.
