Abstract
This study investigated various environment changes during cold water events in the summer season at the Pohang around East coast of Korea. In this study, the cold water means the seawater whose water temperature is 5 ºC colder than surrounding areas. When cold water expands or changes its propagation direction, National Fisheries Reasarch & Development Institute (NFRDI) of Korea issues an upwelling cold water warming because the cold water affects strongly the field of aquafarm. To understand cold water effect, in this study, we performed various environmental factor analyses using satellite and in-situ data over from summer to fall of 2011~2019. To investigate the cold water life cycle, we used the satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST) data distributed from NOAA, the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI)-derived Chl-a concentration data, in-situ ocean surface current data, and in-situ wind data. As a result, we validated that cold water events tend to be expanded in the early summer and be shrunk in the late summer. Also, we found out that the expansion and shrinking of cold water zones is repeated several times during cold water events. In addition, the result showed that the cold water causes the Chl-a bloom in the late summer
