Abstract
Distributions of temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients (Ammonia, nitrite+nitrate, phosphate, silicate), phytoplankton chl-a, and dissolved heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) were measured in the sublittoral zone of Marian Cove, King George Island, Antarctica, during austral summer in 1998, in order to detect baseline levels of chemical parameters for the marine environmental monitoring on the nearshore waters of adjacent to the King Sejong Station. In most cases, inputs of meltwaters from ice cliffs and freshwaters may play an important role in the distributions of environmental parameters of surface water. Concentration of inorganic nutrients were generally high, while phytoplankton chl-a were low. High values of Co, Pb, Zn were found in the waters around Sejong Station, indicating that marine pollution may have occurred in this area. On the other hand, Cu was high in the waters around icecliffs, suggesting that its distributions seems to be controlled by inputs of meltwaters from ice cliffs.
