Abstract
- Free-surface boundary condition is one of the most important factors governing the accuracy of elastic wave modeling technique that can efficiently be used in seismic inversion and migration. We devised a method that exactly describes free surface boundary in finite-difference elastic wave modeling. Our method is to assign material properties such as density and Lamé constants to the areas rather than the nodal points. By using the area-based grid set, we do not have to additionally introduce any constraint of expressing stress-free conditions. Just by defining material properties above the free surface as zero, we could accurately depict free-surface boundary using the finite-difference method. Our method leads to symmetric impedance matrix, thus not breaking reciprocity, which enhances computational efficiency in seismic inversion and migration computing Jacobian (sensitivity) matrix
