dc.description.abstract Influence of the Indonesian Throughflow (IT) on the circulation of the South Pacific Ocean has been studied by comparing solutions of two numerical models (Princeton Ocean Model and 4.5 Layer Ocean Model) with open and closed Indonesian passages. The IT effects in the surface layer are generally in good agreement with those previous model results. The IT contributes to move the South Equatorial Current Bifurcation Latitude(SECBL) to the southward at the Australian coast and it also contributes to maintain the vertical structure of the SECBL. The IT also contibutes to increase the equatorward western boundary currents and to decrease the poleward western boundary currents. It is remarkable that Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) can be easily transported to the equatorward by way of increasing New Guinea Coastal Under Current and Great Barrier Reef Under Current due to the presence of the IT.It is concluded that the IT plays an important role to the water exchange between tropical and subtroipcal gyres in the intermediate layers as well as surface layers. -
