Abstract
Using trajectory data from the subsurface floats (PALCE and APEX) deployed into the Japan/East Sea for the past few years, for the first time we were able to obtain a detailed intermediate level circulation pattern over the south-western part of JES. The circulation pattern, which is consistent with moored current meter data obtained at a few locations, shows that flow in the area is largely controlled by the bottom topography. The main features we have found are as follows: 1) a cyclonic circulation along the Korean cost and Japanese coast, 2) a inflow and outflow system to and from the Ulleng Basin through UIG (Ulleng Interplanar Gap), 3) highly variable circulation pattern within the Ulleng Basin, and 4) the Taylor columns over the sea mounts in the area. This circulation pattern can be used in other areas of research, for example, the verification of numerical model results.
