dc.description.abstract In constructing breakwaters, which have generally been located on a soft ground in Korea recently, considerable expenditure and time consumption are required for a ground improvement. In this paper, a new type bottom mounted breakwater (so called soft ground breakwater) is introduced, which was developed to overcome those problems mentioned above through the MOMAF R&D project started in 1998. The breakwater may be applicable to very soft ground conditions, directly, because the effective weight can be controled by using buoyancy tanks included in the foundation structure of the breakwater. Therefore no ground improvement is required. The major results related to the performance of the breakwater are summarized, which were obtained from numerical tests, hydraulic experiments, and small scaled tests in the soil box. Field test plan is also included. -
