dc.description.abstract How is the southern Yellow Sea circulation related to the thermohaline front formed in winter? We have attempted to observe the existence of outflow and inflow currents by examining CTD and satellite-tracked drifter positions in February 2001. The northwestern part of the front appeared to be partly collapsed, suggesting a northwest intrusion of saline water to the Chinese coast, while the Chinese coastal water appeared to extend southeast to the Cheju-do. Drifter tracks support the existence of a northwest inflow in the collapsed frontal zone and a southeast outflow in the shallow coastal area. The inflow and outflow currents are highly correlated with the wind, but the upwind theory does not explain the northwest inflow. -
