Abstract
Severe Typhoons that gave huge demage in the coastal area of Korea occurred more frequently last couple of years than before. The prevention and mitigation of coastal hazard is one of the main concerns of the ocean policy makers in Korea now. Korea Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF) requested Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) to prepare a long-term plan to counter-measure the coastal hazard resulted from the severe storms such as typhoon and winter monsoon by building more effective real-time water level monitoring and prediction system for the coastal waters of Korea. The plan and proposal on the establishment of real-time coastal water level monitoring and prediction system in Korea for the prevention and mitigation of the coastal hazard will be introduced in detail in this paper and cooperation among the NEAR-GOOS countries will be discussed.
