dc.description.abstract | Marine bacteria capable of degrading PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) were isolated from a series of marine sediments through the enrichment method with ca. each 500 ppm of pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene as a sole carbon and energy source for two years. Samples were spreaded on ZoBell 2216e medium and colonies showing different morphology were isolated. Based on the partial sequence of 16S rRNA, the isolates were affiliated into 14 known genera and 4 novel genera. Major two genera were genus Sphingopyxis and genus Bacillus. Phylogenetic position of isolates reflects the difference of sampling site, strains identified as -proteobacteria were dominant in estuarine area and strains identified as bacillus were dominant in off shore area. The four novel genera were identified as a novel species of genus Tetrasphaera, a novel genus in class Flavobacteriaceae, a novel genus in class Oceanospirillaceae and a novel order in -Proteobacteria based on polyphasic taxonomy and pylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA.
