dc.description.abstract Measurements of the upward and downward light fields in oceanic waters around Korea were made to facilitate the analysis of sun-induced chlorophyll a fluorescence signal and derive remote sensing algorithms to estimate chlorophyll concentration from the space-acquired ocean color image data. We estimated the fluorescence line height (Flu) by constructing a baseline using bands on either side of the fluorescence band in the remote sensing reflectance spectra. Using the measured chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration as the index for quantifying the algal material, statistical relationships between this index and Flu(681), Flu(688), Flu-Area, and Flu(688/444) were established. The empirical formula obtained from these relationship were then compared with those derived from the relationships between chlorophyll concentration and the respective traditional spectral ratio of remote sensing reflectance, Rrs(443)/Rrs(555) and Rrs(490)/Rrs(555). The correlation coefficients of the fluorescence-based algorithms were higher than those of the traditional spectral ratios algorithms. The validation of these algorithms suggests that predicted chlorophyll concentrations with Flu(681), Flu(688) and Flu-Area were highly correlated with the in-situ Chl-a. However, there was a significant errors was possible with the band ratios algorithms. Although changes in the amplitude of the Flu peak and position of the peak, induced by physiological changes of phytoplankton and other environmental factors such as temperature, light condition and nutrients, are possible, they are likely to be small compared to the changes occurring in the blue-green part of the spectrum due to variations in the optical properties of particulate and dissolved matters. -
