Abstract
Long-term moored current measurements across the UIG clearly indicate there is a negligible mean inflow of the Deep Water colder than 0.1C into the Ulleung Basin, implying the previous estimates of diapycnal mixing and the dynamics of the deep cyclonic circulation should be reconsidered. While the long-term mean net transport is negligible, the temporal variability is strong with a dominant period range of 20-50 days. Fluctuations of inflows and outflows at a period of 40-50 days through the UIG are coherent. Dynamics of this strong variability and its impacts on the circulation in the UB need to be understood.
