dc.description.abstract The East Sea having subtropical and subarctic circulations bounded by the thermal front is known for the formation of numerous anticyclonic eddies influencing spatial and temporal dynamics of the phytoplankton blooms. These complex physical and biological processes have been investigated with data collected from the space borne satellite ocean color and infrared observation sensors. Satellite observations of SST and ocean color by AVHRR and SeaWiFS apparently show the dynamics of these eddy fields and associated high phytoplankton biomass. In-situ measurements of temperature and salinity off the East Korean coast show cold and low saline surface water along the coastal areas and warm and high saline subsurface water offshore, which indicating the northward flow of East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) deserves an important focus as a recurring and energetic feature influencing the dynamics of mesoscale anticyclonic eddy fields in the central East Sea. These observations suggest that the process of formation and decay of such eddies might often produce interior upwelling that shoals and steepens the nutricline, enhancing phytoplankton population by advection or diffusion of nutrients. -
