dc.description.abstract This study observed whole life history stages of jelly fish, Aurelia aurita in laboratory, and quantified characteristic items at each stage, which mass-occurred frequently at coastal waters in Korea. Concurrently, field study was conducted in Masan bay, Korea, where the jelly fish appeared frequently and bloomingly. Planula larvae released from A. aurita, which was collected in Masan bay, developed to the attach stage, after slowly moving in the container filled with natural seawater for 5 days. The planula larvae selected proper site for attach and transformed through metamorphosis to the stage of scyphistoma (hereafter, polyp). The attach rate varied with temperature in the range of 12% between 15 and 24℃, 15% at 10℃, 28% at 20℃, 33% at 30℃, indicating that higher attach rate is related to the higher temperature. The metamorphosis of planula larvae to the polyp showed slow rate, whereas polyps gave rise asexually to a lot of polyps, over 70 individuals divided from one polyp after two months. The polyp developed into the strobila and formed ephyra by strobilation. One strobila formed ephyra larvae of average 10 individuals. Ephyra developed into medusa having no tentacles with diameter of 5 ㎜ after 14days. Ephyra developed into adult medusa with tentacles of diameter of 10 ㎜ after 20 days. Resultantly, released ephyra developed into adult medusa of 3 ㎝ after 50days. -
