dc.description.abstract The spatial distribution of surface chlorophyll in the Japan/East Sea varies from year to year and from season to season. To explain the variability, we hypothesize that stability of water column might control the light condition in spring season and the nutrient resupply in fall season. To test this, we compared the time series of surface chlorophyll and mixed layer depth at stations from four sub-regions in the Japan/East Sea; Primorye coast, Japan Basin, Ulleung Basin, and Yamato Basin. Eight-day time series of MODIS/Terra chlorophyll, PAR and sea surface temperature from 2000 through 2004 were used. For mixed layer depth during 2000 to 2004, modeled data (data produced by the scheme of Karra et al., 2000) were used. QuickSCAT data were used for wind. The results show that spring growth can be largely explained by seasonal evolution of mixed layer depth while the fall growth cannot be explained in the same way. The reason for the difference and alternative explanations are discussed. -
