dc.description.abstract Hydrographic data were analyzed to investigate surface and intermediate layer circulation in Ulleung Basin surveyed in July 2005. Water masses were clearly classified by temperature and salinity. Surface water that appears in summer season, Tsushima Warm Current Water, East Sea Intermediate Water and East/Japan Sea Proper Water were major water masses. East Korean Warm Current flowed to northeastward separated from Korean coast near Pohang, based on synoptic analysis of horizontal thermal fronts in depths of 30~100 m. Horizontal temperature structure at 200 m depth and vertical section along 37.0oN showed mesoscale warm eddy. Thus surface flow pattern was anti-cyclonic circulation in Ulleung Basin. Below the Tsushima Warm Current Water, there was East Sea Intermediate Water that characterized by salinity minimum and oxygen maximum. Offshore side salinity minimum core water was detached from inshore side core water. On isopycnal surface, East Sea Intermediate Water flowed from the north to the south along the continental shelf and then intruded into Ulleung Basin. -
