dc.description.abstract To reduce environmental impact due to large scale coastal development and to prevent coastal hazards along the coastal region as well as to support various maritime activities such as shipping, fisheries, military operations and other ocean industries, coastal environmental conditions need to be properly monitored and predicted. Development of direct and indirect methods for data production is necessary for the seas adjacent to the Korean peninsular. KORDI has been carrying out a research project on the development of an Integrated Coastal and Ocean Observing System which is aimed at building an integrated ocean monitoring network for the waters around the Korean peninsula. Since 1998, KORDI has been developing instruments and technologies for real-time field observation as well as other complementary methods such as remote sensing and numerical modeling. In 2000, MOMAF (Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) has designed the implementation plan for the establishment of a real-time coastal and ocean monitoring network in Korea. According to this plan, KORDI has been constructing the real-time coastal and ocean observing station using a light tower, coastal pier, coastal tower, ocean station and offshore structure like gas platform by stages since 2001.Sixteen coastal and ocean observing stations are currently operating. MOMAF is planning to establish about 91 real-time coastal and ocean observing stations by 2010. These stations will produce valuable and various coastal and ocean information for the prevention of natural disasters, development of coastal regions, development and management of ocean resources, preservation of coastal and ocean environment, monitoring of climate change and other sea based industry. Implementation of Real-time Coastal and Ocean Observing System in Korea will be introduced. The Current Status and Plan of Real-time Coastal and Ocean Observing System in Yellow Sea will be introduced, too. CKJORC and KORDI have been preparing th -
