Abstract
This research purposed to screen functional materials from marine plants and examine the biological activities of the materials for development of food supplement. Seaweed extracts were prepared from 30 seaweeds and total phenolic contents were determined. Biological activities such as anti-oxidation, anti-bacteria of seaweed extracts were investigated and two brown algae, Ecklonia cava and Sargassum siliquastrum showing high antioxidant activity based on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity, were further investigated for their inhibitory effects on tyrosinase activity and angiotensin converting enzyme activity. Total phenolic contents strongly correlated with antioxidant activity in thirty seaweeds extracts. The results suggested that seaweeds could be considered as a potential source for the extraction of phenolic compounds, which might be used as natural antioxidants, pharmaceutical uses, dietary supplements or food products. Further studies on the characterization of individual compounds of seaweed extract would be beneficial to explain the various mechanisms for the results observed in this study.
