dc.description.abstract | The biological efficacy of the Electro-Clean System (ECS) was tested using marine organisms which consisted of three groups such as 10-50㎛, ≥50㎛ and bacteria. Experimental conditions were 8.7ppm (Expt. 1) and 26.6ppm (Expt. 2) for total residual chlorine (TRC) under the flow velocity of test water through the ECS as 23.8 m3/hr. And the test water was met according to the standards derived from the 53rd MEPC conference. The efficacy of the group 10-50㎛ (phytoplankton) was analysed by three kinds of measurements with photomicroscope, epifluorescence microscope and fluorometer (Turner Designs 10-AU). After being passed through the ECS, all motile phytoplankton lost their motions and the colour of chlorophyll turned from red into green, the chlorophyll fluorescence changed into zero value in both Expt. 1 and Expt. 2. These results indicated the phytoplankton was totally killed after treatment. As the organisms with a size of ≥50㎛, survival for zooplankton was determined based on the movement under a stereo microscope. Natural assemblage collected from ambient seawater was killed immediately shortly after being passed through the ECS, whereas Artemia was survived. However, the subsequent death of it was observed after 24hours under the dark condition of exposure to each TRC concentrations of Expt. 1 and Expt. 2. The target bacteria in the two conditions were aerobes, coliform and E-coli which were completely killed after treatment on the basis of inoculation method using Petrifilm plates (3M TM). | - |
