Abstract
Variation of typhoon intensity and ocean mixed layer characteristics over the typhoon passing track have been investigated using a simple typhoon intensity prediction model coupled with simple ocean water column. For understanding the model response on the initial typhoon characteristics and ocean vertical structure, we have carried some ideal case study on the interactions between the typhoon and the ocean. And we applied this model to some realistic typhoons approached Korean peninsular before.In the ideal case study, we assume the ocean characteristics of the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea as simple as possible. Two simple paths are chosen based on historical typhoon passages, one is called eastern or warm route and the other is western or cold route. The sensitivity of the typhoon intensity on the sea surface temperature, mixed layer depth, ocean vertical thermal structure, and the typhoon translation speed has been investigated in both routes.Some distinguished typhoon cases are simulated using this simple model and the importance of ocean characteristics on the typhoon intensity prediction are suggested with the future strategy of the coupling with full ocean general circulation model.
