dc.description.abstract The interannual variability of the North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) is examined based on a coupled general circulation model simulations. The North Pacific SST anomalies are dominated on interannual timescales (5-6 years), which is associated with zonal wind forcing. The easterly (westerly) wind forcing leads to the warm (cold) SST anomalies in the northward of 25 ºN through northward (southward) Ekman advection. These alternating winds are associated with the convection in the North Pacific that serves as a negative feedback. For example, the easterly winds advect more moisture to the central North Pacific where the convection is enhanced by increasing instability. And then, the westerly winds due to enhanced convective activity give rise to cold SST anomalies through cold advection. -
