dc.description.abstract To investigate an intrusion of bottom cold water from the East Sea to the western channel of the Korea Strait, we carried out four hydrographic surveys in March and August 2003 and June and November 2004. Bottom water colder than 10°C appeared in the channel trough at all times except in March 2003. In August 2003 and November 2004, bottom cold water flowed southwestward along the Korean side of the shelf. The intrusion current had a width of 20 km and a maximum speed of approximately 25 cm s-1 off Ulsan, Korea. The transport of the bottom cold water entering the western channel was 0.019 Sv (Sv ≡ 106 m3 s-1) in August and 0.026 Sv in November. These results suggest that the southwestward intrusion of the Korea Strait bottom cold water occurs from early summer to fall. -
