dc.description.abstract The turbulent boundary layer underneath ocean waves greatly affects mixing and transfers of momentum, heat, and gases across the air-sea interface. In order to investigate turbulence properties in this subsurface boundary layer, it is required to decompose the original velocity field into turbulent and non-turbulent parts. At present, there is no method that satisfactorily decomposes the velocity field of wind waves due to the unsteadiness induced by the wave motions. One possible way would be to use a general turbulence decomposition techniques that are widely used for other unsteady flows. In this study, some of these techniques are applied to a PIV (particle image velocimetry) dataset of wind-generated waves and their adequacy is examined. -
