dc.description.abstract Observations of the Earth’s near-surface temperature show a global-mean temperature increase occurs from 1910 to 1940 and from 1970 to the present since 1900 (Tett et al., 1999, Nature), which similarly correspond to the variability of global sea surface temperature (SST). Previous studies have suggested that the causes of global warming during the first half of the 20th may be due to variations in the sun’s irradiance, on the other hand, that during the late 20th is mainly due to human induced anthropogenic forcing. In this paper we analyzed the characteristics of Pacific SST variability during the two epochs. In particularly, we focus on the differences of North Pacific SST variability in terms of its amplitude, period and connections with the tropics between the two epochs. Our result indicates that there are striking differences of liner trend in the North Pacific, supporting that causes of SST increase during the two epochs are quite different. -
