dc.description.abstract The Saemangeum dike is being constructed on the mid-western coast of Korea. The dike, 33 km long, will enclose a coastal area of 40,100 ha this year. The dike construction changes greatly the coastal hydrodynamic system around the Saemangeum area where tide is dominant in circulation system. In particular, tidal currents in the near field of the dike are largely reduced, although the tidal range is slightly decreased. Direction and speed of tidal residual currents are also changed remarkably. Riverain freshwater in the inner area flows out through two sluice gates (300 m and 240 m in width) after the dike construction. Numerical model results show that the discharged water does not mix up quickly with its surrounding seawater under the reduced tidal mixing condition. The fresh water discharge can have an effect on marine environments near the dike. Impact on the marine environment in the outer area by the discharge can be mitigated partially by controlling the discharge at the gates as well as opening time of the gates -
