Abstract
The Yellow Sea is a semi-enclosed continental shelf, which is one of the 50 Large Marine Ecosystems (LME) of the world. China, South and North Korea are the countries bordering on the Yellow Sea. Consequently, the organic pollutant is expected to come mainly from these countries. To enforce Stockholm Convention for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in 2004, a concerned interest on POPs pollution in this area is visible. In this study, we tried to assess the contamination characteristics of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls, traveling a long distance through atmosphere to the Yellow Sea. Various environmental matrixes such as sediment, seawater, and air were collected on board R/V Eardo in September 2004 and October 2005, and analyzed. PCB, DDT, and HCH compounds were identified as major organochlorine contaminants in this region. PCBs, DDTs and HCHs were extensively distributed at all the matrixes. But their compositions are diverse according to matrix type. In particulate phase of air, PCBs and endosulfan II showed relatively higher composition compared to other organochlorines. However, in the vapor phase of air, HCH compound showed a predominant composition, which is a different profile in comparison to that observed at the inland of Korea. At all the matrixes, p,p’-DDT showed the higher composition than its metabolites, indicating a recent input of DDT to the Yellow Sea. On the contrary, HCH isomers showed different composition between vapor and particulate phase of air, as well as in water. The dominance of γ-HCH was homogeneously found at particulate phase from air to bottom layer of the Yellow Sea, while α-HCH was abundant in vapor phase of air, and α-, β- and γ-HCH showed an equal contribution at the dissolved phase of water.
