dc.description.abstract Generally shipyards are located inside of natural or artificial semi-enclosed bay. Hence, relatively weak environmental disturbance by ship-building activity can cause severe ecosystem damage to the bay and nearby area. Most of shipyard pollution study has been focused on the antifouling agent, like tributyltin. This study aimed to investigate PAH contamination caused by ship-building activity. Caged mussels were deployed at seven sites including shipyard and nearby areas. Samples were retrieved seven times until 45 days after transplanting. After 45 days, sum of 16 PAHs accumulated in the mussel tissue ranged from 101 ng/g to 162 ng/g dry weight. The highest concentration was found inside shipyard and according to the distance from the yard, accumulated PAH level decreased. At three sites long-term exposure experiment were conducted until 120 days after transplanting. Even after four month, mussels continuously accumulated water-borne PAHs and did not reached maximum concentration, i.e. plateau. Low molecular weight PAHs (molecular weight < 220) were dominantly detected regardless of deployed sites. PAH composition well correlated between inside and far outside shipyard, implying that PAH pollution source is located inside bay. Alkylated PAHs were also detected dominantly, which are major constituents of petrogenic PAHs. And source recognition index using phenanthrene and C1-phenanthrene (MePh/Ph) clearly indicated that petroleum products are major source of PAHs into this region. -
