Abstract
The distribution of PAHs has been investigated in the surface sediments of Masan Bay, Korea. The overall concentrations of sixteen PAHs in surface sediments were in the rage of 171 – 707 ng g-1. Spatially, inner bay showed higher PAH level than the outer bay, indicating that their source was located inside the bay where industrial complex and urban area are located. The distribution of PAHs are significantly correlated with those of PCBs and DDTs (r2=0.65, p < 0.001). On the contrary, PAHs doesn’t show any correlation with alkylphenols, representative sewage marker, which shows higher concentration in front of the outfall of sewage treatment plant. This result indicates that sewage input is not the main input pathway of PAHs to this bay. Source recognition index using phenanthrene / Anthracene and fluoranthene / pyrene indicated that burning of fossil fuel is the major source of PAHs. But, the signal of petrogenic sources was also found at the inner part of the bay. The concentrations of alkylated PAHs in the inner bay is in the range of 38.5 – 303 ng g-1 (mean value; 162 ng g-1), which is three times higher than that of the outer bay (mean value; 47.20 ng g-1). Additionally, petrogenic signal was also detected in front of the outfall of sewage treatment plant.
