Abstract
The Han River passes through the metropolitan city Seoul and provides reservoir for water supply. To investigate current status of PAH contamination, riverine sediments were analyzed. Spatial distributions were checked according to upper, main and down stream and seasonal changes were also monitored in the main stream. Spatially sum of 16 PAHs varied from 77.6 ng/g to 529 ng/g, and main stream showed relatively higher concentration than other sections. Among upper and down stream, stations near cities and recreational areas revealed elevated levels. Upper stream consists of Buk-Han and Nam-Han River, and they showed similar contamination level. But their confluence point, Paldang Dam was highly contaminated with PAHs. There appeared seasonal variations, winter season high and summer season low contamination level. Seasonally, total PAHs ranged from 163 ng/g to 1,350 ng/g. Magnitude of seasonal variations were much higher in lower reaches than in upper reaches of main stream. Heavy rainfall in summer and heating fuel consumption in winter are suggested as major factor for this seasonal pattern. High molecular weight PAHs mostly generated by combustion of fossil fuel dominated regardless of sampling time and place. Urban run-off and atmospheric deposition were discussed as main input sources into this region.
