Abstract
Previous studies to document a warming of Earth's climate system due to increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases have focused on surface air temperature and sea surface temperature (SST). The analysis indicates that Earth's surface temperature has increased during the 20th century by between ~0.3°C and ~0.6°C (Houghton et al., 1995). In more detail observations of the Earth's near-surface temperature show a global-mean temperature increase of approximately 0.6C, occurring from 1910 to 1940 and from 1970 to the present (Tett et al. 1999). Because of the vast spatial domain covered by the ocean and the strong interannual-to-decadal variability sea surface temperature (SST) might be expected to significantly influenced by the observed global warming and vice versa. Studies on the SST changes under climate change projection heavily rely on the analysis of the output from long-term coupled model simulations. Global climate modeling studies indicate that as global temperature rise due to increased greenhouse gases, the mean state of SST in the Pacific will shift towards a permanent El Nino-like state the equatorial eastern Pacific. Like many aspects of anthropogenic climate change, however, the future mean state of the tropical Pacific SST under global warming is uncertain. For instance, Collins et al. (2005) argued that the most likely scenario in the CMIP (Coupled Model Inter-Comparison Project) models is for no trend towards either mean El Nino-like or La Nina-like conditions.
