dc.description.abstract The Han River passes through the metropolitan city Seoul and provides reservoir for water supply. To investigate current status of PAH contamination, riverine sediments and water were analyzed. Spatial distributions were checked according to upper, main and down stream and seasonal changes were also monitored in the main stream. Spatially sum of 16 PAHs in surface sediments varied from 77.6 ng/g to 529 ng/g, and main stream showed relatively higher concentration than other sections. Dissolved PAHs in surface water ranged from 5.2 ng/L to 16.3 ng/L with average of 9.5 ng/L. Mainstream and downstream showed relatively higher concentration than upstream. Particulate PAHs were in the range of 1.9 ~ 38.1 ng/L with average of 11.0 ng/L. Downstream showed highly elevated concentration due to the high SS burden. Except downstream, dissolved phase PAHs were higher than particulate phase PAHs. There appeared seasonal variations in sediments, winter season high and summer season low contamination level. Seasonally, total PAHs in surface sediments ranged from 163 ng/g to 1,350 ng/g. Magnitude of seasonal variations were much higher in lower reaches than in upper reaches of main stream. High molecular weight PAHs mostly generated by combustion of fossil fuel dominated regardless of sampling time and place. There was good correlation between PAHs in soil and sediment, implying that most of PAHs found in sediment come from soil, via episodic events like storm water runoff. -
