Abstract
Siberian High is the strongest semi-permanent high in the northern hemisphere. The center of Siberian High is near Lake Baikal, where the average sea-level pressure (SLP) exceeds 1030 hactopascal (hPa) from late November to early March and it is often above 1040 hPa. The Siberian High affects the weather patterns in the higher latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Recently, the previous study shows the weakness of SH. Especially, the SH has been weak sharply during the last 20 years (Abdelwaheb Hannachi and David B. Stephenson, 2005). This study will examine the characteristic of SH according to the kind of data source. ECMWF, NCEP and Trenberth dataset were used to study the weakness of SH during last 20 years. All data are used upon reanalysis data and winter season (December, January, February: DJF) data were used because the SH affects strongly the weather during winter season. The analysis result of ECMWF and NCEP2 didn’t show the dramatic chang. However, the SLP of SH in trenberth dataset shows rapid decrease (fig. 1). The SLP of center of SH decreased about 6hPa from 1979 to 2000. The change of SLP can affect the wind field, so the long term wind field was investigated in this study. To understand the change of SH, Aleutian Low was studied using trenberth dataset (fig. 2). Wind data in Jeju, Incheon and several points in Japan were used to study the relationship between wind field and SLP. The long term trend of wind field show different features according to each station. In Incheon, Jeju and Sungsanpo in Korea and Wajima and Fukaura in Japan, the wind speed is decreasing (Fig. 3). Because of a locality of each site, the results don’t show the same tendency. Therefore, the wind field was studied using mean area wind.
