dc.description.abstract The Saemangeum dike, the 33 km long sea dike enclosing 401 km2 of mid-western coastal area of Korea, has completed in April 2006. Sea water can be exchanged only through two sluice gates, 300m and 240m width, after the dike closing. The gates outflow has an influence on marine environments in off-shore area of the Saemangeum. The behavior of the outflow is investigated by the field observations and three-dimensional numerical model experiences. It can be used for making the gate operation guideline to mitigate the environmental impacts. In the off-shore area of the Saemangeum dike, the tidal range slightly decreases and the tidal current is drastically changed after the dike closure. The gate outflow is generally stagnant near the gates and causes the strengthening of the vertical stratification in the off-shore area of the dike because of reduction of tidal mixing. Controlling fresh water flux and opening time, Marine environmental impact can be mitigated partially. -
