dc.description.abstract The profile of a fixed site at M station (34◦ 46' 30'' N, 129◦ 08' 00'' E) in the Korea Strait was investigated from March 2006 to February 2007 for the seasonal variation of phytoplankton composition with environmental factors such as temperature, salinity and nutrient conditions, which strongly influence the proliferation and diversity of phytoplankton. The concentration of chlorophyll a ranged between 0.01 and 2.135 μl-1. The species composition of phytoplankton changed according to the depths and temporal variation. A chain-forming diatom, Chaetoceros socialis (0.02 - 11.58×105 cells l-1) predominated phytoplankton population between March and June 2006 before a thermocline formed, while the phytoplankton population was predominated by dinoflagellates, such as Gyrodinium species (0.002 - 0.22×105 cells l-1) during the thermal stratification between July and December 2006. Chaetoceros socialis (0.004 - 3.0×105 cells l-1) prevalently dominated phytoplankton community again from January 2007 toward the end of experiment. -
