Abstract
Intricate and striking patterns of suspended sediments created by a complex interplay of physical, chemical, and geological processes in the East China Sea (ECS) and Yellow Sea (YS) have been investigated using the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) data from 1998 to 2006. The structure of these patterns can reveal a great deal about the processes underlying their formation. A careful analysis of seasonal patterns in conjugation with other data gave birth to the definition of the evolution of suspended sediments (SS) into four stages: activation stage, younger stage, mature stage and extinction stage. Each of these stages experiences the different characteristics of waters and numerous physical mechanisms that control pattern formation during the winter monsoon. According to SS concentration results by using annual SeaWiFS data from 1998 to 2005, SS plume of the Yangtze has a big difference with before and after 2003. In situ data related to vertical and horizontal profiles of SS concentration and particle size distributions have good potential in predicting and confirming the evolution of the younger stage. The SS evolution could be important for several aspects and in resolving the controversial problem of the existence of the Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC). The most significant result inferred from these profiles is that the high density sediment plume appeared to be propagating from the southwest coastal sea of Korea to the southern YS, leading to eventual collision with the massive plume originating from the Yangtze banks of the ECS.
